Lake Tahoe Environmental Programs
Since 1969, the Lake Tahoe basin has led the nation in environmental impact programs. The fast pace of developments in the region during the 1960’s led California and Nevada to form a bi-state compact to protect the watershed and natural features that make Lake Tahoe so spectacular.
Under the Nixon administration, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency was formed. Over the years, they have implemented wood stove ordinances to protect the air. They also organized Best Management Practices to regulate how irrigation runs from private homes into Lake Tahoe. Their shoreline plan controls how buoys and piers can be constructed in a way that minimizes environmental impact.
TRPA’s Environmental Improvement Program is the collaboration of local, state, and federal government agencies, private entities, scientists, and the Washoe Tribe of Nevada and California to restore the environmental health of Lake Tahoe.
This program works to restore watershed and water quality, forest health, sustainable recreation and transportation. It also funds scientific research, stewardship and accountability. To date, they have implemented 835 programs with $2.9 billion invested. You can track their many projects here.
Earth Day April 22nd
On April 22, 1970. the first Earth Day was organized. Today, they mobilize over 1 billion people across the world. Originally inspired by student anti-war movements, Senator Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin wanted to energize an environmental clean up movement with the same inspiration, commitment and drive.
Choosing a date between spring break and final exams, activists traveled to the universities to engage clean up movements scheduled for April 22nd. Over the years, this brought more awareness to the necessary changes that would improve the planet. This included changing from leaded gasoline to unleaded, removing pesticides, raw sewage and efforts to protect our wilderness areas.
